What to Expect at Your Appointment
During a facial, the technician will first ask about what concerns the individual has about his or her skin. The technician will also look closely at the skin to determine the health and hydration of the skin and pores and to determine what types of exfoliants, serums and moisturizers should be used. Individuals should already be performing a healthy skin routine at home but should skip any at-home exfoliants and peels for a week prior to the facial. Makeup is okay to wear to a facial because it will be removed by the facialist during one of the preliminary steps. Most all traditional facials consist of the following four steps.
Step One: Cleansing
During this step, the skin is cleansed and prepared for the rest of the facial. Makeup, dirt and grime are removed to prepare the skin to be deeply cleaned and hydrated.
Step Two: Exfoliating
During exfoliation, the outermost layer of dead skin cells are removed and underlying dirt is extracted from deep with the pores. Steam may be used to help open the pores.
Step Three: Massaging
The face and neck are massaged both for relaxation as well as to improve blood flow to the skin. Improved blood flow can improve skin radiance and regeneration.
Step Four: Mask
A mask is customized for the client’s specific concerns and can target anti-aging concerns, such as fine lines, sagging skin and age spots, or another concern, such as dry skin.
Preparation & Recovery
Very little preparation is needed for the traditional facial. Individuals should tell the facialist any concerns that they may have with their skin. Most facials last around one hour although some can last as little as 30 to 45 minutes. They are a chance to relax and rejuvenate the skin.
After the facial, the individual’s skin may appear a little red and blotchy from the exfoliants and peels that were used. Other side effects could include mild inflammation and flare-ups of acne. Individuals should maintain a healthy skin care regimen by daily using mild cleansers as well as moisturizers. Those having the ZO three-step peel will be sent home with products that will extend the life of the peel. Additionally, individuals are encouraged to protect their delicate skin with sunscreen whenever they are outside.
