Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a word used in media and skin care circles, yet not many understand the word’s meaning. The term ‘microdermabrasion’ is an exfoliation technique that improves skin appearance. Specifically, dull and damaged skin requires microdermabrasion to smooth out and illuminate rough and faded skin.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Digging deeper into microdermabrasion’s purpose, this technique uses suction and gentle scrubbing to remove dead skin cells. The top layer absorbs the most damage from exposure to the elements and skin issues (bumps, redness, complexion, etc.). The microdermabrasion procedure uses a diamond-tipped wand to remove the skin’s top layer, exposing a fresh, smooth, and youthful complexion underneath. In return, the results are similar to a light chemical peel. The difference is the new skin in microdermabrasion assists in skin growth and thickening collagen.

Recovery time is minimal with minimal side effects. No topical ointments or anesthetic is necessary to soften burns, irritation, or pain because none of these uncomfortable signs exists. The best patients eligible for microdermabrasion contain skin conditions such as minimal sun exposure damage, dull complexion, and uneven skin tone.

Is Microdermabrasion right for you?

Microdermabrasion is a wonderful choice for busy adults on the go. These people want the amazing results but cannot afford to sit at home to recover.

Microdermabrasion’s popularity means you’ll expect to see this procedure at the local spa. Unfortunately, the local spa treatments contain staff that lacks knowledge in the risks and complications of this procedure. Therefore, let a qualified esthetician take care of your skin. The training related to skin care is exceptional, meaning risks are minimal and complications are few.

How Microdermabrasion Works

Two microdermabrasion techniques exist. The first procedure requires the surgeon to use a hand-held device to stream crystals across the skin. The vacuum will suck those crystals back into the machine after the crystals exfoliate the skin. Skin cells suck into the machine too, revealing the beautiful skin underneath. The final procedure uses a diamond-tip wand that moves across the skin and gently exfoliates it. A separate suction device will lift the dead skin cells from the vibrant skin underneath.

Both procedures are 30 minutes. If a mild scratching occurs as the dead skin peels off, it’s normal. Expect a vibrating motion on your skin resembling a facial massage.

Patients choose one of two microdermabrasion techniques available. After selecting the procedure and performing microdermabrasion on your skin, the plastic surgeon may recommend a product to prolong and enhance the amazing results. It could be a moisturizer or a facial product.

Special Considerations, Risks and Recovery

Microdermabrasion is gentle compared to lasers or dermabrasion. If discomfort exists in any way, understand that it’s temporary. The uncomfortable feeling, including swelling and redness, will last a few hours. Afterward, the skin becomes flaky and dry for days. In some cases, patients might experience additional risks such as:

  • Mild hyperpigmentation
  • Suction bruising
  • Skin sensitivity in sunlight; Avoid skin sensitivity by wearing sunscreen.

Since this procedure is quick and painless, patients can return to their normal lives immediately. With additional sessions, expect a slight increase in skin complexion. After completion of all sessions, the overall appearance is significant.
